I've sat across the table from hundreds of contractors — reviewing their books, analyzing their margins, helping them understand where money goes. Most had the same problem: they were running profitable businesses but couldn't see it in their numbers.
Before starting Level, I spent years in private equity evaluating 200+ service businesses for acquisition and built AI-powered accounting products at BuildOps — the largest field management software for commercial contractors. I did operations analytics work with Astra Service Partners, CIVC Partners (the PE firm behind American Refrigeration), and other PE-backed portfolios in the trades. I saw firsthand how the difference between a well-managed back office and a messy one could mean millions in enterprise value.
The pattern was always the same. Owners who were great at the trade but flying blind on the financial side. Bookkeepers who recorded transactions but never connected them to business decisions. CPAs who showed up once a year to file taxes and left.
