What is Revenue per Technician?
Also called: revenue per tech, revenue per field employee
Revenue per technician is the total revenue a business produces divided by the number of field technicians, a quick read on how much output each unit of scarce skilled labor generates.
When skilled labor is the constraint, headcount is the real capacity limit, not capital. Revenue per technician turns that constraint into a number you can trend and compare, and a rising figure means you are getting more out of the crew you already have instead of just hiring your way to growth.
The metric has a blind spot: revenue is not margin. A shop can lift revenue per tech by chasing big low-margin jobs and feel busier while making less. Pair it with gross profit per labor hour so you are watching profitable output per person, not just volume.
How it is calculated
Revenue per technician = total revenue for the period divided by the number of field technicians (full-time equivalent) during that period. Use billable field headcount, not total headcount, to keep it comparable.
