Contractor Software Comparison: What Finance Actually Needs
Most software comparisons are feature checklists a mile long. For a contractor, only a few things decide whether the system fits the work: can it produce a WIP schedule (work-in-progress / percentage-of-completion) and run certified payroll (Davis-Bacon, WH-347) without a workaround, and how hard is your data to get back out. This is 103 tools read through that lens, 32 of them from hands-on implementation experience.
The short version
- Purpose-built construction systems (Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, Sage 100 Contractor, Trimble Spectrum, Viewpoint Vista, Deltek ComputerEase, Acumatica) do WIP and certified payroll natively.
- QuickBooks Online does neither natively. QuickBooks Desktop does certified payroll but only basic WIP.
- NetSuite and Xero handle WIP but need an add-on for certified payroll.
- Pick for the feature you cannot fake. And a migration is not the only fix, most contractors are blocked by the data layer feeding the system, not the system.
Accounting & ERP systems: WIP and certified payroll fit
These systems own the books, so native WIP/POC and certified payroll matter most here. "Add-on" means a second vendor and an integration seam where data drifts.

The full contractor software landscape (103 tools)
Beyond accounting and ERP, the contractor stack spans field-service management, project management, estimating, payments, AR automation, payroll, and AI-native point tools. Every one of these eventually has to hand its data to finance, which is where the seams show up.

How to actually choose
Pick for the feature you cannot fake. If you do public or prevailing-wage work, native certified payroll narrows the list fast. If your lender or bonding company lives on your WIP schedule, native percentage-of-completion does the same. And before you spend six figures and 6-12 months migrating, confirm whether reconciling what you already run gets you the outputs you need, because in our experience most contractors are blocked by the data layer feeding the system, not the system itself.

FAQ
Which contractor accounting software does WIP and certified payroll natively?
Purpose-built construction systems do both natively: Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, Sage 100 Contractor, Trimble Spectrum, Viewpoint Vista, Deltek ComputerEase, and Acumatica Construction. QuickBooks Online does neither natively; QuickBooks Desktop does certified payroll but only basic WIP. NetSuite and Xero handle WIP but need an add-on for certified payroll.
How should a contractor choose accounting or ERP software?
Choose for the feature you cannot fake. If you do prevailing-wage work, native certified payroll narrows the list fast. If a lender or bonding company lives on your WIP schedule, native percentage-of-completion does the same. Brand familiarity is the most common reason contractors end up on a system that cannot do the one thing their work requires.
Do I need to switch software to fix my numbers?
Often no. Most contractors are blocked by a data layer that was never set up to feed the system job cost, WIP inputs, and payroll detail cleanly, not by the software itself. Reconciling what you already run can produce trustworthy WIP and job-margin outputs without a 6-12 month migration.
Source and method note: Native-vs-add-on support and data-access labels are compiled from current vendor documentation and Level's implementation experience across these systems. Features change by product edition and release; confirm against your specific edition before deciding. Data-access labels describe how reachable your data is, not a verdict on product quality. Not sure your current system can give finance a number you trust?
Send us the report you trust least. We'll show you whether your stack can produce a clean WIP schedule and job margins without a migration, or where the data layer is the real blocker. Free audit included.
No commitment. Real numbers, not generic advice.
